Chapter 6

“Here, slow down. Shit, Zane, turn left!”

“What?”

“Left! Left!”

We brake hard and I brace myself on the dashboard. I don’t want to get into another car accident. That would make, let’s see, three in a month? Yeah, I’ve had my fill of that, but the way this night is going, God and the universe seem to have different ideas.

We manage the turn, the wheels making a short, sharp squeak and me sliding into Zane.

“What are we doing here?!” He hisses furiously. “There’s nothing up here!”

“Slow down,” Darius says, pulling me to him again, hands brushing and stroking at random places, checking to see if I’m okay.

He lets out a long breath. “Slow. We aren’t in a hurry. Find a hidden place to park.”

Steep, short driveways lead into double car garages with large, trendy modern homes attached. Floor to ceiling windows and skylights abound. They’re nice. I’d love to live here.

I mean, I would have, once upon a time.

“There! Pull in there. Quietly.”

At a particularly steep incline, there’s a pocket of forest without a house nested inside the trees.

Zane slows the truck to a crawl.

“The cops will see the tire tracks,” I point out.

Darius pets my hair. “They aren’t even going to look here. An old clunker like this? All they’re going to do is put the license plate in the database.”

“Well, he’s right about this being a stupid place to be,” Zane says. “I thought we were going near downtown. There’s nothing out here!”

“There’s people asleep in their beds.”

Zane’s exclamation gets cut off by the bump of us going off paved road. Darius holds me tight, and we bounce in our seats. Once we’re in the grass though, the truck rolls forward like a champ. We’re sideways, but the treads stick to the hillside no problem. The trees have been left alone, for the scenic value no doubt, and Zane angles us for a space far narrower than the aforementioned garages. But we should fit. Barely.

The soil flattens out some as we ease in to the shadows. Not very far. The side of another home peaks through the tree trunks. This is a very small pocket of untouched land.

“Here?” Zane asks.

Darius nods, and he shuts off the truck.

“Hope nobody calls the police to let them know about the noisy gas guzzling giant rolling through.”

“I don’t think they would. But if they did, I can count on you right? To protect him while I’m gone?”

Zane frowns. “You aren’t going without us, are you? There could be cameras in these homes, you need to be careful.”

“Wait.” I look at Darius. “I thought I was coming?”

I can already tell by his guarded expression how this is going to go.

“You said I could come. You said you weren’t leaving me!”

“This is for the best. Childe…” He gathers up my hands as I cringe at the word. “You don’t want to come. Trust me. You’re too sweet, even for your dissonance.”

That stings. I know I let him down, but I want to make up for it.
